The Studebaker was put into place using a ramp designed by Pillsbury which was only visible from the other side of the car.  This was no different than stunts carried out by movie professionals today, and less because the car was unoccupied when it was placed and its security was checked before anyone was allowed to enter for the shots to be taken.  Pillsbury proved this to his life insurance company, who cancelled his policy later in the day.
